Our design brief for this project was to develop an interesting solution to the problem of office overcrowding in media leader Framfab`s Clerkenwell headquarters. Our dual aim was to free up space in the ground floor lobby area, whilst establishing a distinctive and coherent pattern which would then be mirrored in the remaining upper floors.
Our design stemmed from the conceptual parallel of the `worker bee` - in particular the composition of the beehive`s honeycomb lattice as a source of visual and spatial inspiration. We developed this idea into an intelligent modular solution, opening out the lobby interior by means of duplicated tessellating units, which both physically and perceptually maximise the available space. Each self-sufficient hexagonal unit also functions as a plug into which furniture units can be slotted, transforming the lobby layout instantaneously into different configurations. This approach avoids any structural invasion of the existing plan, whilst being suitably versatile for application in both the busy meeting areas and the work stations on other floors.
